Officially founded in 1948 by Chaim “Mietek” Gringlas, CMG Electric Motors commenced its operations in 1950. Initially manufacturing and repairing electric motors as a sole trader, CMG’s first premises was in the garage of Mietek Gringlas’s home.Adopting the house as a storeroom, the garage soon became too small to accommodate the growing business. In 1955 CMG moved into its first factory in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn. By this stage the business had expanded to include 8 employees. A second factory opened at Ringwood in mid-1962.
In 1974 Jack Gringlas, Mietek Gringlas’s son, commenced working at CMG in between his studies at Melbourne University. Graduating with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering in 1975, Jack continued working at CMG and eventually became the owner and General Manager in 1984. Since he became GM, only the second one in its 60 year history, Jack had pursued a program of expansion for CMG.
As a result the company expanded to include gearbox and variable frequency drive products, and established a network around Australia, with locations in every state. In 1996 CMG consolidated Ringwood manufacturing (plus an additional warehouse in Boronia) to its current Rowville site, which includes a large manufacturing plant and modifications division. CMG has also established sales and warehouse offices in New Zealand, Singapore, the United Kingdom, China, Malaysia, the Middle East, and South Africa.
CMG has not only expanded internationally, but also through the acquisition of other related industry companies such as Sankey Australia, Transmission Australia, OBA and Torin Industries. As a result of the company’s vertical integration, the group consolidated to form its current holding company, CMG Engineering Group.
From humble beginnings to its present form as part of a global engineering group, CMG continues as a family owned company with a strong set of values. The fact that CMG is Australia’s only remaining electric motor manufacturer is testimony to the integrity, commitment and drive of its management. top
